Puneri Humour
[via [info]sat2]

Punekars (Maharashtrians of Pune) have a peculiar sense of humour, if I may call it that, which borders on the sarcastic and sometimes rude. Take a look at some Marathi (local language) signboards in Pune.

The last image, the Web site one and the joke on Chitale, is a figment of imagination. The others signboards are actual photographs from the streets of Pune.

And this one especially for Atul :)

Brilliant collection!
May fave: Hey karyalaya aahe...
I have also been told that the 'siesta' time for Pune shopkeepers extends from 12 to 4 pm!
Cheers!

The siesta time is absolutely true. I was visiting someone in Pune for a short while and staying over the weekend. I got up late, realised I had forgot to get the tooth paste and rushed to a shop just before mid-day (or so I thought). On asking the shop-keeper (who was getting ready to close the shop for the famous siesta) for the tooth-paste, he showed me the time in his watch, then the board (which said closed for leisure for 12-4pm), gave me a lecture about the benefits of getting up early and showed me the tea-shop nearby. Then closed his shop and left for his siesta. That's Punekar attitude for you :)

I beg to differ Premnath... Yes goan shops are closed between 1pm and 4pm.. But a goan shopkeeper would open the shutter for a last customer..

Wow! That is a message from the past:-) This post is dated 6.6.06 and my comment a day later.

Regarding the Goan shopkeeper, with the tourism inflow there, I wonder if anyone has a fiesta there now as seriously as before.

I went there last year and didn't have any such problems. Everyone seemed awake.

The boards are so unique to Pune and maharashtrians. Nearly a decade and half ago, we were hunting for an address on Poud road. Since we could not locate it, my father and I entered a shop to ask the shopkeeper. He walked outside the shop and for a moment we thought he was giving directions, till he brought our attention to a board hanging outside which read," Ithe chambhar chaukashya karunaye".

I like Poona for all its chutyagiri and nice winter climate...Poona shortly will beat Bombay in its supply of real comedy.

I think we should all go there and meet these guys who came up with these board and put them in a hall of Fame!!

LOL!

There is one more that I have seen,

1) Hanging next to a doorbell,
"Salesman, Choukashi kivha survey karnarayani bell vajvu naye. Ani tari bell vajavlyas darvaza ughadla janaar nahi."

2) Another one, once again, next to a doorbell,

"Bell ekdach vajvun kahi kshan thambave. Teenda bell vajvun hi jar koni daar ughadle nahi, tar aaple ya gharat swagat nahi ase samjave ani nighun jaave."
